“Honour killing is a pre-islamic custom, based on ignorance and disregard of morals and laws. It’s against the teachings of Islam and Shariah law: all forms of life are sacred.” (Jamila Sajid)

Ithink it’s high time we recognised this as an issue because it is the most pervasive yet overlooked form of abuse in our country. Pakistan has the highest number of documented and estimated honour killings as one-fifth of the world’s honour killings are committed here. The government should end such a system in which a woman’s life is considered worthless and family members can kill her at their convenience. At the moment Pakistan does not have specific laws that stop honour killings. The government should look into the matter seriously and punish the murderers together with enacting laws that prohibit such acts.
