It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed board member, John Scales Avery, who left us on 4th January 2024 at the age of 91. John’s impact on the fields of mathematics, chemistry, and information theory within the context of biological evolution is immeasurable. However, beyond his academic contributions, he will be remembered for his profound literary works that shed light on the history of science, the implications of technology on humanity, and the powerful forces that have shaped civilization, democracy, and social institutions.

We take pride in archiving all his new books at EACPE, ensuring that his intellectual legacy endures. His teachings were enlightening, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change, articulating the environmental toll of relentless economic growth, and sounding a clarion call against the dangers of modern weaponry long before mainstream awareness.

John’s commitment to humanism, paired with his emphasis on science and rationality, united us all. In 2013, he graciously joined the Eqbal Ahmad Centre for Public Education as a board member, contributing to our shared mission of promoting knowledge and understanding.

As we bid farewell to John Scales Avery, we mourn the loss of a gentle, compassionate, wise, and profoundly humane individual. His influence reached across the globe, and he will be dearly missed by those whose lives he touched.

Yours in sorrow,
Eqbal Ahmad Centre for Public Education (EACPE)
